“When it comes to source material, few things have been more important to hip hop than Ultimate Breaks & Beats. Compiled by Louis Flores, aka Breakbeat Lou, the 25-volume series was released between 1986 to 1991 via Street Beat Records, offering up a diverse collection of tracks – many of them dating back to the 60s and 70s – with extended drum breaks. As such, they made for perfect sampling material and DJ battle tools, and the collection has been utilized over the years by all-star producers like DJ Premier, Large Professor, The Bomb Squad, Pete Rock, Dr. Dre, Marley Marl, J Dilla and Just Blaze, amongst countless others. With the assistance of partner Lenny Roberts, Breakbeat Lou was behind it all, although his career certainly didn’t begin there. Growing up in the Bronx, Flores was immersed in early hip hop culture, started DJ-ing at the age of nine, and became an ardent fan of Afrika Bambaataa. After meeting Roberts through a New York City record pool in 1980, the two began issuing bootleg 12″es and later, partially inspired by Paul Whitley’s Super Disco Breaks, conceptualized the Ultimate Breaks & Beats series. In 1995, Flores took a self-imposed hiatus from music, but the hardcore digger and collector made his return in 2009, and has spent the past few years on the DJ circuit, frequently linking up with Peanut Butter Wolf and other members of the extended Stones Throw family.”
