Event Description:
Black is Back Coalition for Social Justice, Peace and Reparations Calls on the African community to Defend the People of Haiti
Washington, DC – February 9, 2010 – The Black is Back Coalition for
Social Justice, Peace, and Reparations has announced a National Rally
& March to Defend Haiti scheduled for February 20, 2010 beginning at
10:00AM in Miami, Florida’s Athalie Range Park and ending at the U.S.
Immigration & Naturalization Center.
The Rally and March are to protest the United States’, Canada’s and
Europe’s response to the 7.0 earthquake that on January 12th destroyed
Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince killing hundreds of thousands and
leaving millions homeless. The mobilization is to also protest their
long-standing racist, oppressive and subversive foreign policy
initiatives as it pertains to the first African Republic in the
Western Hemisphere.
Since January 12th the imperial powers have intensified the
militarization of Haiti under the guise of bringing “order” and a
“sense of security” to Haiti’s capital while the provision of food and
medical care and attention have been given secondary attention. The
underdevelopment of Haiti, the result of French colonialism and U.S.
military intervention over the last 200 plus years, will only be
exacerbated by this over 10,000 person strong troop surge.
The Black is Back Coalition will, therefore, call for the immediate
removal of all foreign military troops in Haiti including those from
the United States, Canada, Europe and the combined imperial forces of
the United Nations and an end to the military occupation there so that
the people of Haiti can be free to govern the affairs of their
country.
The Black is Back Coalition also recognizes that the imperial powers
have, since 1804, mercilessly sought to punish the people of Haiti and
destroy their liberation movement because they led the first
successful workers’ revolution in the world. To redress decades of
hostile foreign policy initiatives by the imperial centers of the
globe and so that Haiti can rebuild, the Black is Back Coalition will
also demand:
1. The return of President Jean Bertrand Aristide from forced exile in
South Africa and the restoration of democracy in Haiti.
2. That Reparations be made to Haiti by France and the United States
for slavery and the looting of the Haitian national treasury in 1934.
3. The repudiation of the Wet Foot/Dry Foot Policy that unfairly
discriminates against Africans from Haiti and the establishment of an
open door policy that allows Africans from Haiti to enter the United
States, and any other country, unfettered.
4. An automatic removal of the $80 Temporary Protective Status (TPS)
fee that is associated with the application for this status.
5. The immediate removal of trade, aide and loan restrictions by the
World Bank and other international financial institutions. And that
Haiti’s so-called debts to these institutions are forgiven.
6. The immediate removal of maritime restrictions that keep
neighboring countries of CARICOM and Latin America from providing
assistance to Haiti.
The Black is Back Coalition for Social Justice, Peace and Reparations
– a group made up of mostly U.S. based black organizations – is
calling on the African community to take up our responsibility to
defend and uplift our sisters and brothers in Haiti.
Forward to Miami!
